You can upload Microsoft Purview exports directly into Everlaw through Everlaw's cloud connection with Microsoft Purview. A Purview export is a review set that you have packaged and prepared for download within Purview. On Everlaw, the documents uploaded through the cloud connection are formatted, accessed, and reviewed the same as those uploaded through a local upload. This includes attachment family grouping, email threading, and chat formatting. Sensitivity labels are not supported.
Requirements
Before any user can upload using this cloud connection, an Administrator for the Purview tenant must consent for Everlaw to access the information in Purview. The Admin does this entirely within Everlaw, when starting an upload using the cloud connection. See Step 4 in the Upload data through a cloud connection to Purview section for how to consent. An Administrator for Purview is a Microsoft Entra account with one of the following roles:
- Privileged Role Administrator, for granting consent for apps requesting any permission, for any API
- Cloud Application Administrator or Application Administrator, for granting consent for apps requesting any permission for any API
- A custom directory role that includes the permission to grant permissions to applications, for the permissions required by Everlaw
When an Admin connects Everlaw to Purview, they can accept the permissions just for themselves, or consent on behalf of the organization to allow additional users to perform subsequent uploads.
If a user attempts to form the connection to Purview before an Admin has consented on behalf of the organization, they create a consent request in Entra. An Admin can approve the request from within Entra.
When they do so, the Admin consents on behalf of the entire organization, which will allow all other Purview users within the tenant to upload Purview exports using the cloud connection with Everlaw. To create restrictions around which users will be approved to connect Everlaw to Purview, use user assignments. You can read more about this process in Microsoft's article Review admin consent requests.
Required permissions: Once the permissions have been delegated, as described above, using the cloud connection to upload data directly into Everlaw from Purview requires:
- That the user has Database Upload permission in Everlaw
- A Purview account with access to the exports to be uploaded
Data Security and Privacy
When an Admin grants permission to form the cloud connection between Everlaw and Purview, they grant Everlaw the following permissions for their Purview tenant:
- eDiscovery.Download.Read
- Read all eDiscovery objects
- Sign you in and read your profile
- Maintain access to data you have given it access to
Upload data through a cloud connection to Purview
To upload data from Purview using the cloud connection:
-
Go to Data Transfer
> Uploads. This takes you to the uploads page.
- Select Native Upload. Then select Start upload.
-
Under Collect from cloud application, select Purview.
- You are then prompted to log into your M365 account with access to Purview, or if you're already signed in, select your account. This opens a dialog to choose your case.
Note
Note The first time your organization connects to Purview from Everlaw, a user must consent to allow Everlaw to access information and data within Purview. This user must have one of the following Entra account roles:
- Privileged Role Administrator, for granting consent for apps requesting any permission, for any API
- Cloud Application Administrator or Application Administrator, for granting consent for apps requesting any permission for any API
- A custom directory role that includes the permission to grant permissions to applications, for the permissions required by Everlaw
To consent, select Consent on behalf of your organization and continue with the upload.
This consent is saved for future uploads, so other users will not need to complete this step. Each user on subsequent uploads is limited to the exports that they have access to within Purview, based on their permissions and access within Purview.
- On the Cases step, select the case that contains the export you'd like to upload.
- Select Next to move on to the Exports step.
-
On the Exports step, choose the export you want to upload.
- If you are happy with your selection, select Continue. Otherwise, select Previous to edit your choice.
- You are taken to Everlaw’s native data upload wizard. Here, you can name your upload, specify deduplications settings, and choose which projects to upload the data to. For more information about these upload settings, read this section of the Native Data Uploads article.
Note
You cannot select or modify Custodians for Purview uploads through the cloud connection. The custodian for each document is determined by the custodian designated within Purview at the time the export was created.
