Everlaw AI brings the power of artificial intelligence to core litigation and investigation workflows on Everlaw. Everlaw admins control:
- The cases that have access to Everlaw AI features
- The use of AI credits
- Which features are enabled at the organization and project levels
- Which users are able to use specific Everlaw AI features
Having fine-grained control over who is using Everlaw AI, and what they are using it for, allows you to direct your team's resources toward the workflows that make a difference in your case.
This article describes how to use the following tools to manage your organization's use of Everlaw AI:
- Everlaw AI credits (required for batch Everlaw AI features and Deep Dive)
- The organization Everlaw AI page, where Organization Admins and AI Admins can keep track of credit and feature use for their organization
To learn about managing AI at the project level, see Manage Everlaw AI at the Project Level.
Introduction to Everlaw AI credits
As a general rule, individual Everlaw AI Assistant tasks are available at no cost, while batch actions require credits. Tasks that do require AI credits consume a variable number of credits depending on the feature and the scope of the action (e.g. number or length of documents analyzed).
The table below outlines which Everlaw AI features require credits:
| Feature | Billing type |
| Review Assistant single actions (Q&A, summaries, topic/sentiment analysis, coding suggestions, custom extractions on a single document) | No cost |
| Single document translation and storing (via the review window’s Language tab) | No cost |
| Writing Assistant’s Deposition Analyzer, used for evidence and transcript analysis | No cost |
| Writing Assistant features (generate memos, outlines, lists, tables, and rewrites) | No cost |
| Transcript Q&A | No cost |
| Review Assistant batch actions (batch summaries, topic analysis, coding suggestions, custom extractions across document sets, translation and storing) | Credits |
|
Generate summaries of documents added to Storybuilder in batch Summaries generated when documents are added to Storybuilder are also available in results tables and in the review window. |
|
| Deep Dive enrollment | One-time credit cost for data enrollment |
Credits are also not required to view existing generations. Once a generation is created, it is accessible in your project regardless of whether you’ve purchased credits in your current Everlaw subscription period or have remaining credits.
Credits for Paid AI
Certain Everlaw AI features, such as Batch Review Assistant and Deep Dive, are offered on a credit-based system. There are two formats for Everlaw AI credits, prepaid credits and on-demand credits.
- Prepaid credits: Credits that have been pre-purchased by your organization and are consumable over the applicable period
- On-demand credits: Credits that are consumed once any prepaid credits have been exhausted. The dollar-value of consumed on-demand credits is billed to your organization on a monthly basis in arrears. Price per on-demand credit is as stated in the Order Form or, if none, as presented in the Service.
If a Paid AI task requires more than the available limit of credits (prepaid or on-demand), the task cannot run. The exception is Deep Dive (explained in the following section).
Deep Dive
Deep Dive enrollment incurs AI credit charges based on the volume of data being enrolled, and batch Review credit limits do not apply to enrollment. This means that when you enroll a project or database in Deep Dive, enrollment will proceed and credits will be charged regardless of any credit limits set for the database. Learn more about enrolling in Deep Dive in Enroll and Get Started with Deep Dive.
Permissions and control over Everlaw AI credits and features
Admins have comprehensive and granular control over the use of Everlaw AI. There are three categories of controls:
- Controls over credit consumption: These controls dictate whether new AI generations can occur by enforcing limits on the number of credits that can be consumed at the Organization, Database, or Project levels
- Controls over AI enablement at the database level: Exclude specific databases from using Everlaw AI features, while allowing others to enable AI features
- Controls and permissions over specific AI feature usage: Separate from the management of credits, admins can also control the availability of different Everlaw AI features at the Organization, Project, or User Group levels
Control and permission hierarchy
All controls and permissions are enforced hierarchically. The organization is the highest level, followed by database, and then project:
-
Restrictive controls or permissions imposed at a higher level are enforced at lower levels, without the possibility of override
For example, if an Organization Admin disables credit usage for the organization as a whole, individual Project Admins cannot enable AI features for their projects -
The most restrictive permission always applies.
For example, if coding suggestions is enabled at the organization level, a Project Admin can turn the feature off in a project
Grant AI Management permission
The organization-level AI Management role allows you to give users in your organization admin rights to Everlaw AI without granting them full Organization Admin status; these users can only access the Everlaw AI pages in Organization Admin settings.
Required permission: Organization Admin
To grant a member of your organization the AI Management permission:
- Select the Organization Home
button in the navigation bar to access the Organization Admin page.
- Navigate to the Projects & Users tab for the organization and switch to the Users section.
-
Locate the user(s) you want to grant this permission to, from the Org admin permissions column dropdown, select AI Management.
Overview of AI management at the organization level
Required permissions: Organization Admin or AI Management
The organization Everlaw AI page and its subpages — Credit management and Usage analytics — allow admins to monitor and control Everlaw AI usage across their organization.
On the main Everlaw AI page, you can:
- Switch on and off Everlaw AI for the organization, which controls the ability for Project Admins to enable Everlaw AI on individual projects
- Control access to specific Included AI features and exclude specific databases from using Everlaw AI
- Control Access to Batch Review Assistant
The Everlaw AI > Credit management page displays information for databases with a contract that allows Paid AI. From the Credit management page, you can:
- Control credit usage for your organization, for specific contracts (if applicable) and for specific databases
- Set up usage notifications
- Enroll in Deep Dive
Note
If your organization includes databases governed by more than one contract, databases and credit usage summaries will be split into separate tables — one per contract.
From the Everlaw AI > Usage analytics page, you can:
- Track credit usage details by database, user, and activity type
- Export current and historical credit usage data
Everlaw AI page: Enable Everlaw AI features
Everlaw AI can be enabled in two ways: directly in Everlaw without a contract (included features only) or by reaching out to your Everlaw representative to sign up for a contract that includes AI credits to access batch action features and Deep Dive.
Note
If you disable features at the organization level, Projects Admins cannot enable those features on individual projects.
To enable Everlaw’s no cost AI features at the organization level:
- Go to Organization home > Everlaw AI.
-
Select Allow Everlaw AI to be enabled for all projects in organization.
When you enable this feature, features in the Included AI tab are switched on by default. You can optionally use the toggles on this page to individually switch any of these features off, which will disable them for the entire organization.Note
This does not turn on Everlaw AI in your organization's projects. Instead, it enables Project Admins to enable no cost Everlaw AI features in the projects they administer.
Enable Included AI
The Included AI tab controls organization-wide enablement of no-cost Everlaw AI actions. Once AI is enabled for your organization, you can use the Included AI tab to:
- Control access to individual document AI actions and to Writing Assistant
- Choose specific databases to exclude from any Everlaw AI use, even if the tools are generally enabled for the organization. This feature lets admins make sure that Everlaw AI is only used on the appropriate cases, and is disabled for any cases that should not use generative AI tools.
To control access to individual included (no cost) features, use the toggles to switch on or off access. Project Admins will be able to enable any features that are switched on here.
To exclude one or more databases from any Everlaw AI usage:
- Under Exclude databases from Included AI, open the Select a Database dropdown menu.
This displays all databases in your organization except those that are enrolled in Deep Dive. - Select a database. The dropdown closes and the selected database is displayed under the field.
- To exclude another database, open the Select a Database dropdown again and select the next one.
Project Admins for projects in the databases you add here will not be able to enable Everlaw AI features. If the features were previously enabled, they will be switched off, though previously generated content will remain visible to those with the relevant permissions.
Enable Paid AI
The Paid AI tab controls access to paid Everlaw AI features. This tab is only useful for those who have an Everlaw AI subscription. Use this tab to:
- Use the Manage Deep Dive Enrollment button to jump to the Credit management page, where you can start enrollment of databases or projects in Deep Dive. Learn about Deep Dive enrollment in Enroll and Get Started with Deep Dive
- Switch on or off batch Review Assistant actions
- Use the Manage credit usage button to jump to the Credit management page, where you control how many AI credits each database has access to
Credit management page: Control organization and database credit usage
Required permissions: Organization Admin or AI Management
Admins can enable and disable Everlaw AI usage for their entire organization or set Batch Review Assistant credit limits for specific databases.
Credit usage for the organization is disabled by default when the organization starts an Everlaw AI subscription.
Important
Credit limits do not apply to Deep Dive enrollment. When you enroll one or more projects in Deep Dive, the enrollment will proceed regardless of whether it exceeds any credit limits set for the database or organization.
Enable/disable Batch Review Assistant credits
To enable or disable on-demand credits:
- Go to Organization home > Everlaw AI > Credit management.
-
In the Summary table, find the Batch Review Assistant section and select Enable and set limit or Edit.
- Ensure you are on the Batch Review Assistant tab in the dialog that appears.
-
Toggle Enable credit limit for Batch Review Assistant on or off.
- If you toggled it on, you must also specify a limit on the number of credits you are willing to consume. This limit is freely modifiable, but can never be set less than the total number of consumed credits.
Note
When the Batch Review Assistant credit limit has been surpassed, batch actions will automatically disable in your organization.
Enable/disable database credit usage
By default, Batch Review Assistant is disabled for all databases. This means that even if you set an organization-wide (or contract-wide) credit limit, users cannot start using Batch Review Assistant until you enable it for a given database (and set a credit limit for the database). The instructions for how to do so are in the below Set database credit usage limits section.
Set database credit usage limits
To set credit usage limits for a single database (or to enable / disable batch AI actions on that database):
- Go to Organization home > Everlaw AI > Credit management.
-
Locate the database you want to set limits for, and select the Settings button.
