Search by Language FAQ

How do I search for documents by language?

You can use the search query builder to find documents based on which languages they contain. To do this:

  1. Drag-and-drop or select the search term “Language” into the query builder.
  2. Select the blank field, and a dropdown list of languages will appear. These are the languages that your project admin indicates are included in your document sets.
    enter language search term.png
  3. Select a language.
  4. [Optional] Select Primary to return documents where the language specified in the search is the language with the highest percentage of text on that document.

To search for two or more languages, add an instance of the Language search term to the query for each language.

Note

Everlaw will only index the top three language results per document. If a document contains large sections in English, Chinese, and Korean, but only a few words in Japanese, it may not appear among search results if you search for documents in Japanese.

You can also customize your results table to see the different proportions of languages in each document. To do this:

  1. Open the results table.
  2. Check for a Language column in the table. If it doesn't exist, select View > Add or remove columns to open the Add or remove columns dialog. Select Languages from the available columns. Then select Save.
This adds the column to your table.
  3. Find the column in your table, and you will see the breakdown of languages.

Note

The Languages column only shows the languages included in the table's underlying search. For example, if you searched for “English” and “French”, the breakdown might show 90% English and 5% French.  The remaining 5% is another language(s). You can further filter on languages using the column's filter button.

Why isn't the Languages search term appearing in my project?

This may be because you have not set up for any non-English languages to be searchable in your project.

To add a language:

  1. Go to Project Settings > Everlaw AI > Machine translation.
  2. At the bottom of the Expected Languages table, in the Add Language input box, enter the language you would like to add.

This populates the “Language” search term with your expected languages and allows the system to search for documents in those languages.
