dtSearch® is a search syntax commonly used in the discovery process and can frequently be found in negotiated production protocols, specifically in keyword lists. Everlaw can translate search terms formatted in dtSearch syntax to Everlaw-supported search syntax and will auto-detect dtSearch syntax when possible.
Translating dtSearch®
To translate your dtSearch terms to Everlaw-supported syntax, navigate to or create a Search Term Report (STR), and click “Import multiple search terms”.
After adding your terms, either by entering them in the text box or uploading a file, select the “Translate from dtSearch®” checkbox under “Advanced settings”. You can only search across document contents when translating from dtSearch, not across metadata fields.
After clicking “Translate terms”, you can review the translations and edit any terms that resulted in errors before adding the terms to the STR. The error message will indicate the position of the character in the string that is causing the error and give a brief description. You can click the Back button to go back to the previous page to edit any entered terms. dtSearch terms that are not fully supported in Everlaw search syntax will be translated to their best approximation, and the translation will have a warning icon and tooltip with more information. You can download the translation report in a .csv file format by clicking the “Download report” button in the top right of the dialog. The translation report can also be downloaded from the Homepage under the “Batches and Exports” column.
After reviewing the translations, click “Add search terms” to add your searches to the STR.
Autodetection of dtSearch®
Everlaw will auto-detect certain dtSearch® terms in the STR single search input box and in the Contents search term in the query builder. Autodetection may not detect all instances of dtSearch, and for the best translation experience, you should utilize the “Import multiple searches” workflow to translate your dtSearch terms.
When dtSearch has been detected, a dropdown will appear and prompt you to click on the dropdown to translate your search.
Clicking the dropdown will populate the translated search into the text box. From there, you can click Save to add the term to the STR or Search to run the search. If there are any errors with translation, the dropdown will show a red error message indicating which character in the search is causing the error and giving a brief description of the error.
If there are any search terms that aren’t fully supported, the dropdown will show a gray warning message and the best approximated translation will be populated into the text box.
