Clarify

When you encounter an unfamiliar term or phrase while reviewing a document, use Clarify to get an in-context explanation, based on information in your project documents. A contextualized explanation within the document lets you understand what's going on without stopping to run a search or guessing at the meaning.

The Clarify button is available in the review window for all projects enrolled in Deep Dive.
In this article we'll cover how and when to use the Clarify button.

Requirements

Clarify is an in-document extension of Deep Dive. To use it, you must:

Note

Clarify is not available for users in our GovCloud environment.

When to use Clarify

Use Clarify when you come across an unfamiliar term or passage, such as a code name, acronym, or technical jargon. Clarify leverages Deep Dive's understanding of your documents to search for relevant information and generate a brief clarification. The clarification opens as a popup window within the document review window.

As with Deep Dive, the clarification is pulled solely from your documents, and cites them. This means that a clarification:

  1. Is customized to what you're working on, based on the context and information provided by your data
  2. Can be traced back to its source of truth in just one click

Clarify keeps your review moving, with a trusted explanation always a click away.

How to use Clarify

Clarify is available in Text selection mode.

Note

Clarify is only available for selectable text. It is available in the PDF view and Text view when there is selectable text, including transcripts for A/V files. Spreadsheets and chat files in their native view cannot be clarified. Neither can documents without an underlying text file.

To use Clarify:

  1. While in Text selection mode, highlight the unfamiliar term, then select the Clarify button from the options.

You can highlight up to 1,000 characters.
The AI will get to work researching the selected term across your project.
  2. A popup box will explain the term, with citations to the document(s) from which it gathered the explanation.

    Note

Clarify respects document access restrictions; the explanation is only built from documents you have access to.

Use the clarification

The clarification is similar to the response to a Deep Dive question. Each fact in the clarification is cited to a document in the project, indicated with a number. To interact with a clarification, you can:

  • Hover over a citation to see more about it
  • Select a citation to open the cited document in a different window. If the citation is from the same document you are reviewing, it will instead take you to the relevant passage within the document. The text from which the response was drawn will be highlighted as a Custom hit in the Hit highlights tab.
  • Use the Save highlight with note button to create a highlight of the original unfamiliar term, with the clarification attached as a note to the highlight. This makes the clarification available to anyone from your team who comes across the saved highlight in the document. Citations are not included in the note.
  • Use the Copy button to copy the clarification for use outside of Everlaw or in Storybuilder
  • Use the thumbs up or thumbs down buttons to give Everlaw feedback about the clarification. This can help us improve the tool in the future.
