Everlaw supports batch machine translation and storage of non-English language text for organizations using Everlaw AI Assistant. In addition to Everlaw’s ad hoc translation (the standard, all-access non-English translation functionality), which allows you to perform ad hoc translations on individual documents, this feature allows users to:
- Bulk translate non-English documents
- Search documents based on their stored translated text
- Avoid the need for repeated translations whenever they view a document
Translations can be created from either the results table or the review window, and they can be viewed in the review window for each document. They can also be exported as needed.

In this article we’ll show Project Admins how to enable Everlaw Translation and grant permissions to users.

Requirements
To enable this feature and grant feature permissions:
- You must be a Project Admin
- The organization must have the Everlaw AI Translation storing feature enabled.
- The project must have Project credit usage enabled.
Machine translation providers, data security, and privacy
Non-English documents are translated within Everlaw’s secure environment using either Google Translate or Amazon Translate. The following sections provide information on each translation service:

Google Translate:
- Google does not permanently store any data related to its enterprise translation services. To learn more, visit Google’s FAQ on data confidentiality.
- For EU and UK Customers, if you select Google Cloud Translate, your translation data is routed through the EU Endpoint rather than the global or US endpoint.
- Google Translate is not available in Everlaw GovCloud. For more information, visit Comparing Your Public Sector Cloud Options

Amazon Translate:
- To understand Amazon’s data confidentiality policies, visit Amazon’s FAQ on data privacy.
- Everlaw has opted out of allowing user translation data to be used for developing Amazon Translate or other AWS AI tools.
You may also opt out of using machine translation on your project.
Language detection (not translation) takes place at the time of upload.
Enable Everlaw Translation on a project
To enable stored translations for a project:
- Go to Project Management
> Project Settings.
- Select Everlaw AI. Then select Machine translation to open the Machine translation page.
- In the Translation provider field, select either AWS Translate or Google Translate.

Google Translate is not available in Everlaw GovCloud. To learn more, read Comparing Your Public Sector Cloud Options.
Note
Your translation provider may already be set at the organization level, in which case it cannot be modified on the project level.
- Under Store translations, select Enable translation storing.
This opens a confirmation dialog. - Select Enable.
Now what? Before users can opt into storing translations, you must grant the appropriate user group(s) stored translation permissions.
Grant user groups Everlaw Translation permissions
Translation storage is granted to Project Admins by default. For all other user groups, the permission must be granted manually.
To grant a user group permission to store translations:
- Go to Project Management > Project Settings.
- Select Permissions.
This opens the Permissions page for one of your user groups. - From the dropdown menu at the top of the page, select the user group to whom you want to grant permissions.
- In the Everlaw AI permissions section, select Create stored translations.

Disable Everlaw Translation
To disable Everlaw Translation, return to Project Management > Project Settings > Everlaw AI > Machine Learning, and switch Enable translation storing off.
Note
Disabling the translation storage setting does not affect existing stored translations. Users will still be able to access the associated checkboxes on the project’s Search page — Do not search on translated text for the Contents search term and Has stored translation in Language search term. To hide these options entirely, you must remove the associated permission (Create stored translations) on the user group(s).
Frequently Asked Questions
Do stored translations carry over from project to project?
Yes. If a user translates document text, that translation is stored at the database level and will be visible from all projects in which the document exists.
However, the associated checkboxes on each project’s Search page — Do not search on translated text for the Contents search term and Has stored translation in Language search term — are not available to users unless Everlaw Translation is enabled on that project or the project is where the document was originally translated from.
What happens to translated text when a document is reprocessed?
If a document’s translation is out of date after reprocessing, Everlaw displays a notification in the Language tab of the document’s review window that informs the user that text must be re-translated.
To update a translation, select Store, the same button used for the original translation.
